In 2018, metal fabrication specialist and television personality, Tay Whiteside, embarked on the mission to clean out a 100 year old machine shop in his hometown of Roanoke, VA. With the help of his friends Walker Hooper and Riley Murtagh, he documented the experience of digging through the graveyard of machining tools and sending a few to new homes in order to prep the building for a complete overhaul.
In 2020, the building was finally emptied and the renovation began. A new concrete slab was poured, the walls were pressure washed, an office was framed in and new electrics were installed. The downtown headquarters for Tay's fabrication business, Lift Arc Studios, was born.
Lift Arc Studios specializes in custom design and fabrication of anything metal. Ranging from architectural metalworking to automotive modification and fabrication, there's not much Tay and his team cant build or repair. Come with us as we explore the still vibrant craft of fabrication and learn more everyday!

You Can Color Stainless Steel With Lasers?!
Aaron had it right... he was going for a professionnal box/door since Lift Arc is a professionnal shop. the latch is huh... i have the samething on my wood fence, look terrible on a metal box lol
Agreed. But I think going for an internal latch, á la Fire Engine stylee, was gonna be a whole lot more complicated & expensive.
This guy looks almost exactly like my boss's boss's boss
My favorite part of the box was all the sides, the corners were sharp, but the sides were where its at. Latch was... meh, good i guess.
Great job guys. But I really don’t like seeing Aaron not wearing a glove when welding. TIG is the most dangerous welding as far as UV and cancer goes.
Next time jb weld it ... itll look better 😂
Great straight to the point video! You guys have a great team there! It's rare to have a to size template. I'm used to chicken scratch on a sheet of paper from a client!
I think Aaron had it right…inset the flange and door.
Very cool.
Stop drinking 😂
Somehow lower the ph idk what chemicals are in that fluid so no idea what Is safe to add
I exclusively weld stainless. Can someone tell me why he couldn't just do a pass with only torch to fix it?
Ready to have aluminum shavings in your intake valves 😮😢
😂 also you should have backpurged that for sure broham .
Had to also say … your welds don’t look very uniform unfortunately .
I really hope they get all the filings from that drill bit and disc out of there before install..
Copper sulfate
Cover the outside of the drum in expandable foam and your noise level will decrease dramatically
Have some pride in your work
Im not a welder and even i can tell that weld is trash
Bleach it ! No off gassing during operation.
Oooooo trash weld
After being a TIG welder for just over 30 yrs (graduated welding school in '91) keep working on those beads. Thats pretty uneven, even for a repair. When you get good your repair will make the original factory welds look like crap. Not being a dick. Looks like a perfectly good repair. Im just saying that visual appeal on a damn good weld is just the topper on the xake for your customer
That work look like sh*t who said u can weld !!!! It’s look half Azz lazy the work before n after look at the video !! HORRIBLE
Carpet the outside of the drum and that will dampen the noise
Just a little bleach I would think 🤷🏻♂️
I see many problems. I hope the customer got the job done cheap, cause that was pretty awful to be honest. Not trying to bash you, and I'd tell you what I think could be improved if you want, but I doubt you care enough to listen so I won't bother unless you ask me to. Keep practicing and hopefully you get better.
Didn’t see a test. Or maybe you return to customer without fluid or pressure testing.
You don't need that way jacket to weld. Rookie
You just put metal particles all in that intercooler by grinding
Hope the owner flushes the thing before installing
Dude says big glob of weld..... Then proceeded to do big globs of weld
Knipex has a good larger style they offer. Not called engineer pliers though.
Weld is a bit on the cold side but it’s okay I guess
You do aluminum? *brings in pontoon*
Mad skills
Did it crack on the weld because the material wasn't gapped properly?
Spray the inside with rubber undercoating before you use it to damper the noise
ellis parts department is fucking trash rick is an asshole and a idiot. i just sold my ellis and got a dake. folks dont buy ellis anymore they might as well be chinese like everything else.
Please tell me you flushed it before handing back to the client? Some nice engine breaking swarf in there now after drilling it.
Damn, it looks like bubblegum not a steady hand
If it's not too personal, about how much do you charge for something like that? I have some similar projects coming up, and I was looking for a sort of baseline
So I'll ask the owner if he's comfortable disclosing exact numbers, but just what I would recommend regardless is setting a "shop minimum" so set your hourly rate and set an hour minimum for all jobs. All you need to tell your clients is "my rate is ___ per hour, one hour minimum". Don't sell your time short, and you'll often find that clients understand
Homeboy had a scosh too much boost! 😂
That's what I thought too😂
Kool
Slight crack on an intercooler? Jb weld all day.
This is a joke right?
Whatever you add please be cautious. Ergo don't be using white vinegar and then add some bleach bc it will make you sleep forever 😬💀
I’ve been chasing my tail with this welder for a few months now and just can’t get it dialed perfectly. I get about the same amount of spatter shown here and tbh it’s too much compared to other MiG machines. I really want to like it but…can’t.
Throw a copper pipe in there
What about the shavings?
Grind first to find the end of the crack, then drill. The crack could be below the surface.
